About Boxwoods
Boxwoods
Boxwoods are one of many broad-leaved evergreens popular in theLandscape. Boxwoods can be true aristocrats of your landscape. These plants require little attention and develop intolong-lived hardy plants with a little protection just beingmindful of their preferences for conditions. Avoid sites thathave wide fluctuations in temperature, long dry periods, dryingwinds, and intense bright sunshine. These evergreens are wellworth your efforts. In return these plants are naturallyoffensive to deer. Some people say they smell like cat...Liberal use in your landscape makes your garden less attractivefor the deer. Boxwoods drop few leaves at any one time makingthem a clean plant with little mess. Boxwoods seldom becomeovergrown and are relatively pest and disease free. The Koreanboxwoods are the most cold resistant. These plants love a rich, well drained soil. Using aged compost to modify the soils helpsimprove poor existing soils. Protect the boxwoods from winterinjury by planting them on the protected north and east sides ofbuildings or where they will receive wind protection fromnatural features such as other trees or embankments. Fertilizeboxwoods only in the spring. Avoid winter scorch on plants bywatering if rainfall is deficient. Plant larger plants if youexpect winter hardyness to be a factor. Large plants have morereserves and can usually survive the first year after purchasebetter. Boxwoods will add year round interest to your landscapewhen located properly and provide contrast within your landscapein all seasons.
